December 2, 2023 Update

About 2 ½ months have passed since our class on September 16th. I shared with you that if inflation continued to come down it would likely bode well for stocks. Plus, we were coming into a traditionally positive seasonal pattern. Often stocks bottom in September or October and rise into January. Since class, inflation on the consumer and personal level has gone down. Most stocks bottomed around October 26th and have consistently risen.

Regarding stocks, we discussed the value of dividend growth, “best in class” stocks which also have great CEOs. In my opinion, Microsoft, Apple, and JPMorgan Chase fit all 3 criteria. I said that Microsoft looked particularly good because of their involvement in AI (Artificial Intelligence). All three companies have risen in value since our gathering. Microsoft has hit several all-time record highs, with the latest being on Thursday. I shared that Disney had been a “best in class” dividend growth stock. However, it had eliminated its dividend a few years ago to invest in streaming and had been performing poorly with its CEO. However, he was fired about a year ago and replaced by Bob Iger, a former CEO. Iger had been a wonderful CEO for Disney. However, the company’s stock had just hit a 9 year low. Since class, Disney’s earnings report was favorable received and its stock price has recovered. There had been class interest in High Yield Stocks and ETF’s, so I provided some information on stocks that might be worth your consideration. I said that analyst reports on Verizon and AT&T were all over the board, from buy to sell. Since class, both stocks are higher.

From the recent stock lows to closing prices yesterday, December 1st, this is how some stocks and ETF’s we discussed in class have fared comparted to the market average (S&P 500).

S&P 500 up 12%

Microsoft up 20%

Apple up 14%

JPMorgan Chase up 15%

Disney up 17%

AT&T up 17%

Verizon up 26%

JEPI ETF up 6%

Ares Capital up 7%

Blue Owl Capital up 13%

If inflation continues to come down (which I expect), 2024 likely will be a good year for stocks. What is shared is information for your consideration.
